Biographical Note

Pianist and composer Ernest Hutcheson began piano studies in his native Australia with Max Vogrich, then entered the Leipzig Conservatory as piano student of Carl Reinecke and composition student of Salomon Jadassohn. Awarded the conservatory's Mozart prize upon graduation, he made a concert tour of Australia, then undertook additional piano study with Bernhard Stavenhagen in Weimar. Hutcheson came to the United States in 1900 to assume leadership of the piano department of the Peabody Conservatory. He resigned that position in 1912 to resume his concert career until 1924 when he joined the Juilliard School piano faculty. Hutcheson became dean of Juilliard in 1927, then president from 1937 to 1945.
