Biographical Note

American violist and teacher of Austrian birth (1919-1989). Paul Doktor began violin study with his father, a member of the Busch String Quartet, and completed his education at the Vienna Academy of Music, where he received his diploma at the age of nineteen. Switching from violin to viola as his primary instrument, he became the first violist to win the Geneva International Music Competition, and was one of the few to establish a solo career. Doktor moved to New York in 1947 and became an American citizen in 1952. He was a founding member of the New York String Sextet, the Rococo Ensemble, the Paul Doktor String Trio, and the Duo Doktor-Menuhin. Doktor served on the faculty of The Juilliard School (1971-1989), Mannes College of Music, New York University, Fairleigh Dickinson University, and the State University College at Purchase.
