Biographical Note

American composer Blair Fairchild studied music with John Knowles Paine and Walter Spalding at Harvard University, and piano with Giuseppe Buonamici in Florence. After a career in business, and assignments with the American diplomatic corps in Turkey and Persia, he settled in Paris where he renewed his music studies with Charles-Marie Widor. Fairchild’s compositional style was influenced by the music of the Near East and the innovations of contemporaries Debussy, Ravel, and Stravinsky. In 1921 his ballet-pantomime Dame Libellule became the first work by an American composer to be presented at the Paris Opéra.
