The collection

Correspondence, articles, newspaper clippings, programs, professional
engagement materials, writings, photographs, scrapbooks, and music scores
contained in the collection document his long and distinguished career from his
earliest concerts as a young boy in Czechoslovakia to international success as
a concert pianist and recording artist. The collection also chronicles
Firkušný’s life as a young man in Czechoslovakia, his exile due to World War II
and the country’s fall to communism, his many friendships with famous Czech
composers, musicians, and artists, and his family life with his wife, children,
and grandchildren. The bulk of the collection is in Czech.
Series I
consist of biographical materials such as biographies, awards and honors,
passports, daily planners and calendars, school records, and his early
childhood notebook. Additional materials are located in Oversize boxes 17 &
18. Arranged alphabetically and chronologically within. (see also: music
notebooks and compositional exercises in the Lila Acheson Wallace Library, The
Juilliard School)
Series II
consists of correspondence and subject files that are divided into three
sub-series: General, Personal, and Subject files. General correspondence
comprises letters sent to Firkušný: prominent correspondents include Leoš
Janáček (recommendation letters), Lynn Harrell, Yo-Yo Ma, Yehudi Menuhin, and
Maurice Sendak. Personal correspondence comprises letters sent to and received
from his family and personal friend Helenka Pucová. (note: Personal
correspondence may only be accessed for research purposes with the permission
of Véronique Firkušný-Callegari and Igor Firkušný.) Subject files contain other
communications as well as materials such as newsletters, programs, writings,
and booklets. Arranged alphabetically and chronologically within, except
subject files, which are arranged by type within. Additional correspondence is
found in Series VIII Scrapbooks.
Series III
consists of articles and newspaper clippings pertaining to Rudolf Firkušný,
reviews of his concerts and albums, and interviews. Also contained in this
series are articles collected by Firkušný. The newspaper clippings have been
photocopied onto acid-free paper, and the originals are housed in Map Drawer 6.
Additional articles and newspaper clippings are found in Series VIII
Scrapbooks. Folders are arranged chronologically.
Series IV
consists of writings by Firkušný concerning his life, his friends and mentors
Bohuslav Martinů and Leoš Janáček, speeches, and his thoughts on Czech music.
In addition, there are writings written by others about Firkušný and Czech
music. Arranged alphabetically and chronologically within.
Series V
consists of programs and publicity promoting Firkušný and his concerts. The
bulk of the programs are located in Series VIII Scrapbooks. Folders are
arranged chronologically.
Series VI
consists of performance and professional engagement materials such as
contracts, discographies, recordings, handwritten lists of conductor
collaborations, and record books of places where Firkušný has performed,
including graphs. Arranged alphabetically and chronologically within. (see
also: Map Case for maps of performance locations)
Series VII
consists of iconography such as personal and professional photographs of
Firkušný alone, and with his family, friends, and colleagues. Notable figures
include Samuel Barber, Philip Glass, Lynn Harrell, Václav Havel, Leoš Janáček
(signed), Yo-Yo Ma, Bohuslav Martinů, Dimitri Mitropoulos (signed), Charles
Munch, Eugene Ormandy (signed), Arturo Toscanini (signed), and many other
prominent composers, conductors, musicians, and artists. Also included are
posters and drawings of Firkušný by various Czech artists and paintings of Leoš
Janáček and Karla Šindelářová Firkušná (mother). Additional photographs and
drawings are located in Series VIII Scrapbooks. Arranged alphabetically and
chronologically within.
Series VIII
consists of scrapbooks that document in detail the earliest years of Firkušný’s
career. Assembled by Firkušný’s maternal uncle, Jindřich Šindelář, the
scrapbooks include journal entries, photographs, programs, correspondence, and
newspaper clippings. In addition, there is an official A.B.C. scrapbook
(Australian Broadcasting Commission) with newspaper clippings of Firkušný’s
1959 tour in Australia.
Series IX
consists of holographs and holograph facsimiles of piano music, songs for voice
with piano and voice with orchestra, a piano concerto, a string quartet, a
vocal score to an opera excerpt, and musical sketches by Firkušný. Also
includes Firkušný’s notebooks from his private composition and music theory
lessons with Leoš Janáček, holographs by Philip Glass and Rafael Kubelík, and
published music by Dvořák, Janáček, Poulenc and Smetana with autograph

American
pianist and composer of Czech origin. He studied piano and composition with
Janáček from 1919 to 1928, continued his education at the conservatories in
Brno and Prague, and studied privately with pianists Alfred Cortot and Artur
Schnabel. He made his debut as a concert artist in Prague in 1922 and toured
central Europe while continuing his studies in Brno. He performed in England in
1933 and in New York in 1938, and settled in New York in 1940 after the Nazi
occupation of Czechoslovakia. Firkušný's compositions include songs, piano
pieces, a piano concerto and a string quartet, but he largely set composing
aside in favor of his concert career. Although best known for his playing of
standard repertory, Firkušný gave the premieres of concertos by Barber,
Ginastera, Hanson, Martinů and Menotti, and he championed the work of his
teacher Janáček, whose complete piano music he recorded. Rudolf Firkušný served
on the Juilliard faculty from 1965 until his death in 1994.
