Biographical Note

American violinist Joseph Fuchs (April 26, 1899-March 14, 1997) began music studies at the age of four with lessons from his father. He entered the Institute of Musical Art (I.M.A.), Juilliard's predecessor institution, in 1906, studying with Franz Kneisel, Édouard Dethier, Louis Svečenski, and Arthur Argiewicz. He received a Diploma in Violin and a Diploma for Artists' Violin, with honors from I.M.A. in June 1920. His professional career commenced in 1919 with his first tour of Europe and performances in Frankfurt, Munich, and Berlin. He toured extensively thereafter, appearing at the 1953 and 1954 Casals Festivals in Prades, France, and performing in many other cities in Europe, South America, the Soviet Union, Israel, and Japan. Fuchs served as concertmaster of the Cleveland Orchestra from 1926 to 1940, co-founded the re-opening of Kneisel Hall's summer chamber music school in Blue Hill, Maine in 1953, and founded the summer chamber music institute at Alfred University in Alfred, New York in 1981. Fuchs, who played the 1722 ‘Cádiz' Stradivarius, enjoyed a long career, performing his last recital at Carnegie Hall in 1992 at the age of 93. He served on the Juilliard faculty from 1946 until his death in 1997.
