Descriptive summary

Origination:

Gossett, Philip.

Title:

Philip Gossett Collection, 1784-2016.

Extent:

82 cubic feet (283 boxes).

Repository:

Peter Jay Sharp Special Collections, Lila Acheson Wallace Library, The Juilliard School.

Language note:

The collection contains material in English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish.

Organization

The collection is arranged in three series: I. Scores, librettos, and texts; II. Editorial and supplementary resources; III. Correspondence.

Scope and content

The collection comprises primary and secondary sources related to the study of 19th-century (and to a lesser extent, early 20th- century) Italian opera.

Series I includes 505 scores and 8 librettos, a substantial number of which are early published editions. Works of Bellini, Donizetti, Rossini, and Verdi figure prominently, with 81 other composers also represented. A notable feature of the collection is the inclusion of multiple editions of opera scores which Gossett compared in order to trace errors and unauthorized changes, flaws he strove to correct in his critical editions. The series also includes 220 works of literature about Italian opera dating from 1817 to 2016, comprising composers' biographies, analytical essays, dissertations, and articles from scholarly and popular journals. Annotations in Gossett's hand appear in materials throughout the series, as well as inscriptions and dedications to Gossett by others.

Series II comprises various resources used by Gossett for research and in preparation of critical editions, including manuscripts in Gossett's hand, photocopies of manuscript and printed scores, pre-publication editions of opera scores from Ricordi, Fondazione G. Rossini, and Bärenreiter, and related documents. Much of the material includes copious editorial markings in Gossett's hand. Of particular interest are pencil manuscripts of vocal ornamentation and cadenzas devised by Gossett for performances of Il pirata and I puritani by Bellini, Elisabetta al castello di Kenilworth and Maria Padilla by Donizetti, and Armida, Cantata in onore del Sommo Pontefice Pio Nono, La Cenerentola, Le comte Ory, La donna del lago, La gazza ladra, L'italiana in Algeri, Maometto II, Matilde di Shabran, Le nozze di Teti, e di Peleo, Otello, La pietra del paragone, La scala di seta, Semiramide, Le siège de Corinthe, Il turco in Italia, Il viaggio a Reims, and Zelmira by Rossini.

Series III comprises correspondence composed and received by Philip Gossett from 1976 to 2013, a substantial portion of which concerns the Italian opera, 1810-1840 series of scores published by Garland, which he edited.

An online collection created from materials in Series I comprises 462 scores (primarily opera vocal scores) and 71 books on the subject of Italian opera whose dates of publication span the late 18th to early 20th centuries. Vocal scores by Bellini, Donizetti, Rossini, and Verdi figure prominently, with 84 other composers also represented. Digitized books from the collection comprise librettos, composers' biographies, collected correspondence, and music criticism. Those resources can be accessed online from this folder list, individual bibliographic records in Juilcat, and from the Philip Gossett Collection website.

Biographical Note

Musicologist Philip Gossett (1941-2018), an authority on Italian opera, graduated summa cum laude from Amherst College in 1963 with a degree in music, and received his doctorate from Princeton University in 1970, writing his dissertation on the music of Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, and Verdi. He subsequently studied Rossini's operas on a Fulbright grant in Paris. Gossett joined the University of Chicago music department in 1968, and held the title of the Robert W. Reneker Distinguished Service Professor until his retirement in 2010.

Gossett's scholarly pursuits were focused on 19th-century Italian opera, with special interest in sketch studies, aesthetics, textual criticism, and performance practice. A pioneer in the creation of scholarly editions of opera scores, he served as general editor of The Works of Giuseppe Verdi (University of Chicago Press and Ricordi, 1983) and of Edizione critica delle opere di Gioachino Rossini (Fondazione Rossini, 1979), editions based on detailed analysis of manuscript and early edition published scores and librettos, applying standards of scholarship that had previously been reserved for works of German composers. Keenly attuned to the needs of performers, Gossett collaborated with singers Marilyn Horne, Cecilia Bartoli, Joyce DiDonato, Renée Fleming, Juan Diego Flórez and Samuel Ramey, and conductors Riccardo Muti and Claudio Abbado on productions of early 19th-century Italian operas. For his efforts, Gossett was awarded the Cavaliere di Gran Croce, the Italian government's highest civilian honor, and he was the first music scholar to be given the Mellon Distinguished Achievement Award.

Gossett returned to Juilliard several times over the course of his career, coaching singers in a production of Rossini's Le comte Ory (2007), serving as consultant for the Juilliard Choral Union's U.S. premiere of the 1864 edition of Rossini's Petite messe solennelle (2004), and presenting several doctoral forums, including “What Makes an Edition ‘Critical' and Why Performers Should Care: Reflections on Rossini and Verdi” (2004), “From Il Viaggio a Reims to Le comte Ory: Rossini Invents Petite Opéra” (2007), and “Falstaff and the Musical Fragment" (2009).

Gossett was the author of numerous journal articles, book reviews, and opera program notes, as well as the books Anna Bolena and the artistic maturity of Gaetano Donizetti (Clarendon Press, 1985), and Divas and scholars: performing Italian opera (University of Chicago Press, 2006), which received the ASCAP Foundation Deems Taylor Award and the Otto Kinkeldey Award of the American Musicological Society in 2007.
