Scope and content

The collection comprises scores, librettos, sound recordings and papers related to the life and career of Yveta Synek Graff, with an emphasis on material created in preparation for Czech language productions of operas by Antonin Dvǒrák, Leoš Janáček, and Bedřich Smetana. It includes published vocal scores in which Graff inscribed either a translation of Czech words into English, or a phonetic transcription of Czech words. Depending upon their intended purpose, those scores are variously labeled as master score, translation score, transliteration (i.e. phonetic transcription) score, surtitles cueing score, personal working score, and coaching score. Several opera scores contain inserts comprising cast and production crew rosters, rehearsal schedules, and guides to Czech pronunciation. The collection also includes surtitle and supertitle scripts, correspondence, scrapbooks, photographs, posters, literature on Czech music history, books by author and playwright Emil Synek (Graff's father), and a small number of scores and librettos of operas by Philip Glass.

Scores and books without markings were moved to the library's circulating and reference collections. Sound discs are housed in the Media Library.
