Scope and content

The papers comprise correspondence (written by Jeannette Ysaÿe, Eugène Ysaÿe, Pablo Casals, Mischa Elman, Josef Gingold, William Schuman, Efram Zimbalist, Elisabeth, Queen of the Belgians, and others), concert programs, scrapbooks, photographs of Jeannette and Eugène Ysaÿe and other musicians, and miscellaneous documents. The music comprises works for solo violin, violin and piano, and violin with accompaniment arranged for piano. The music collection includes several music manuscripts by Eugène Ysaÿe and dozens of printed scores with his markings. Of particular interest among the manuscripts is Ysaÿe's arrangement for violin, piano, and organ of Chausson's Poème for violin and orchestra, op. 25, which was dedicated to the composer. The published scores with Eugène Ysaÿe’s markings provide important documentation of his performance and teaching styles.

Imprint:

Berlin : Simrock[?], [1888].

Notes:

Violin part only, in fragile condition. Written on the cover: “Jeannette Ysaÿe.” The violin part is marked extensively in blue crayon, for the first three movements, and the markings are probably in Ysaÿe’s hand. The last movement is marked with sections in pencil and sections in blue crayon. The pencil is in a different hand, probably belonging to Jeannette. It could be hypothesized that the bowings and fingerings were copied from a master copy, and the part marked in pencil was copied over by Jeannette.

Imprint:

Notes:

On the cover is written on top: “Jeannette Dincin.” The part is marked in pencil, blue crayon, red crayon, and purple ink. Several of the markings, especially in crayon may be in Ysaÿe’s hand. However, many of the pencil markings are probably not in Ysaÿe’s hand. The piano part is a Simrock edition (1878). There are paper clips on almost all the pages, though those clips do not bind anything. The piano part has several markings in pencil and red crayon.

Notes:

Two copies of the violin part. In one copy, the part has a brown cover with a label “Scherzo Valse [/] Chabrier [/] (violon)” and on the inner cover of the violin part is written “Gabi Ysaÿe” (probably for Gabriel Ysaÿe, one of Ysaÿe’s sons). The part is extensively marked in blue and red crayon, probably in Ysaÿe’s hand. In another copy, the violin part has written on the cover: “Jeannette Ysaÿe.” The part is extensively marked in blue and red crayon, based probably off of the copy described above.

Notes:

American issue of the original Universal Edition. On the cover is written on top: “Jeannette Ysaÿe.” The violin part is extensively marked in blue ink. Note that Milstein and Jeannette Ysaÿe were colleagues who studied with Ysaÿe at the same time. It is quite possible that this copy had been received from Milstein, marked by Milstein, or marked in consultation with Milstein. The last page is a ‘specimen page’ that shows a page from Milstein’s transcription of Liszt’s Consolation. The piano part has no markings.

Notes:

On the upper right of the cover is written: “Jeannette Ysaÿe.” The violin part is marked extensively, most likely in Jeannette’s hand though in many places the fingerings resemble Ysaÿe’s handwriting. It would be improbably for the markings to be in Ysaÿe’s handwriting as the score was printed in 1948 according to the last page of the piano part. The piano part is free of markings.

On the brown paper cover and violin part is written: “Jeannette Ysaÿe” and stamped with Eugène Ysaÿe’s signature and address. The part is extensively marked with red and blue crayon. Though the fingerings and bowings may have been copied from a score belonging to Ysaÿe, much of the handwriting is probably in Jeannette Ysaÿe’s hand though some of the handwriting suggests that Eugène Ysaÿe may have contributed in some places as well. The piano part has a one marking in blue crayon indicating a cut.

Violin concerto no. 6 in E-flat major.

Imprint:

[19--?].

Notes:

Manuscript by an unknown copyist of solo violin part to Mozart Concerto No. 6 in E-flat major [K268] (which itself is a spurious work), with markings and signature by Eugène Ysaÿe. On the outside cover at the upper right, torn, is: “Jeannette Dincin” and in the center, is written: “W. A. Mozart [/] Serie 24 N. 19. [/] Partie Solo [/] Violine principale.” The manuscript is in black ink, in the hand of a copyist, possibly, de Grom, the name associated with several other manuscripts with a very similar handwriting style. The part copies out the entire tuttis along with the solo part. At the end is Ysaÿe’s signature and date: “E.Y. mai 1924” One could hypothesize that this was a work Jeannette had worked on with Ysaÿe in the few years before their marriage. The solo part is marked extensively in pencil, blue crayon, and red crayon, with several instances of either corrections or alterations written in the margins. It is likely that almost all, if not all the markings are in Ysaÿe’s hand.

There appear to be at least three different hands involved in this score. Title:

Chaconne pour violon / arr. Eugène Ysaÿe for violin and organ.

Imprint:

[19--].

Notes:

This is a manuscript, most likely of Ysaÿe’s arrangement for violin and organ of the Vitali Chaconne. The majority of the score is in a copyist’s hand. However, the final section shows an organ part which is completed in the copyist’s hand, but a violin part which is still in sketch form probably in Ysaÿe’s hand. Throughout, there are pencil markings and indications, and the majority of thse are probably in Ysaÿe’s hand. The manuscript paper used is a pre-printed solo + piano layout except for the last two pages, which are not pre-printed with clefs. The page numbers on the last two pages also show signs that the score was cut down in size after the pages were written. On the front cover is written: “Vitali. [/] Chaconne pour Violon.” and on the upper right is Ysaÿe’s stamped signature and Brussels address. The same stamp appears on the inner cover. The stamp has the letters “No.” indicating that this stamp was probably used for items which were limited in their number. There is no number, however, written in after the “No.” on this score. The violin part is extensively marked in pencil and some red crayon. The majority of the markings is probably in Ysaÿe’s hand, and some of the markings are material revisions to the score. This manuscript score may be an earlier version of what is found in Viola Mitchell’s collection. Please also see:
