Biographical Note

American violist William Lincer (1907-1997) began his musical training as a violinist, studying at the Institute of Musical Art with Leopold Lichtenberg, Samuel Gardner, and Erica Morini. In 1941 he was appointed principal violist of the Cleveland Orchestra, and in 1943 he became principal violist with the New York Philharmonic, a position he held until his retirement in 1972. His 57 solo appearances with the Philharmonic included world premieres of several contemporary viola concertos and the American premiere of Mozart's Sinfonia concertante in A major for string trio and orchestra, K. Anh. 104, a forgotten work Lincer rediscovered in 1953 during research at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. He was a member of the Manhattan School of Music faculty from 1960 to 1969, and in 1969 joined the faculty of the Juilliard School. He also served as adjunct professor at Queens College and New York University.
