Scope and content

The bulk of the collection comprises published music, music manuscripts and manuscript facsimiles, mostly for high voice with piano or orchestral accompaniment. Highlights include: the condensed score to Canticle of the sun by Roy Harris, which Peters premiered at the Library of Congress in 1961; operetta excerpts, show tunes and popular songs arranged for Peters with complete orchestra parts; and songs associated with Jenny Lind. An assortment of art reproductions, among them portraits of notable 19th century opera singers, and photocopies of late 19th- and early 20th-century concert programs are included in the collection..

Biographical Note

American soprano Roberta Peters was born May 4, 1930 in New York City. She studied voice with William Hermann and debuted at the Metropolitan Opera at the age of 20. By the time of her retirement from the opera stage in 1985 she had participated in more than 500 performances at the Met and had appeared at opera houses in Berlin, London, Moscow, Munich, Salzburg and Vienna. In addition to concert and recital performances, she performed operetta and musical comedy, and appeared in film and on television.
