Descriptive summary

Origination:

Rubinstein, Artur, 1887-1982.

Title:

Artur Rubinstein Music Collection, circa 1908-1937.

Extent:

1.11 cubic feet (3 boxes).

Repository:

Peter Jay Sharp Special Collections, Lila Acheson Wallace Library, The Juilliard School.

Organization

Organized in a single series of music scores.

Scope and content

Manuscripts, facsimiles, and published editions, primarily of piano music, seized from the Paris home of Artur Rubinstein in 1940 by the Nazi government agency Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg. Confiscated by the Soviet government after the war, the collection was relocated from Moscow to East Berlin between 1958 and 1959. The rediscovery of the scores in Berlin and their return to Rubinstein's children by the German government in May 2006 is due largely to the work of the Dutch musicologist Willem deVries. The collection includes manuscript scores of Villa-Lobos's Rudepoêma, George Antheil's Vals Profane, several works by Germaine Tailleferre, and a substantial number of works by Latin American composers, among them Carmargo Guarnieri and Ernesto Halffter. The collection also includes a small number of songs for voice and piano.

Biographical Note

Polish-born pianist Artur Rubinstein made his concert debut in Łódź at the age of seven, and began advanced musical training in 1897 in Berlin under the supervision of Joseph Joachim, with piano instruction from Heinrich Barth and theory studies with Max Bruch and Robert Kahn. Although he came to be particularly admired as an interpreter of Chopin, early in his career he championed the work of Szymanowski, Stravinsky, Debussy, Ravel, Poulenc, and Prokofiev, and after visits to Spain and South America in 1916-17 he incorporated music by Granados, Albéniz, Villa-Lobos and Falla into his repertory. His international career lasted into the 1970s, and he made many recordings as soloist and chamber musician. Rubinstein acquired American citizenship in 1946.
