Scope and content

The Weingarden Collection documents the life of composer Louis Weingarden, from his childhood through professional career, 1943 to1989.

Series I consists of biographical material from 1943 to 1975, such as birth records, elementary school and high school report cards, biographies, and a catalog of Weingarden’s compositions. Arranged chronologically.

Series II consists of personal and business correspondence from 1962 to 1989, including a letter of recommendation from Elliott Carter for the Koussevitzky Foundation, letters to and from Weingarden’s family, and correspondence from Boosey and Hawkes Inc., Juilliard, and the International Gay History Archive. Arranged alphabetically.

Series III consists of articles and newspaper clippings about Weingarden, including reviews of performances by Garrick Ohlsson, who premiered Weingarden’s Triptych and Concerto for Piano and Orchestra, and his performance with the Oak Park Symphony Orchestra of his commissioned musical tribute to Rabbi Moris Adler, Sorrows of David. The series also includes material collected by Weingarden, such as Daily News and New York Post covers about Richard Nixon in 1974. The newspaper clippings have been photocopied onto acid-free paper. Arranged chronologically.

Series IV consists of writings by Weingarden in addition to writings collected and kept by the composer. Items include sermons and essays by various authors. Arranged alphabetically and chronologically within.

Series V consists of programs and publicity promoting Weingarden and his concerts. Arranged chronologically.

Series VI consists of Awards and Prizes Weingarden received such as the Richard Rodgers Scholarship in Composition and the Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge Chamber Music Prize from Juilliard; American Academy in Rome Prize; Ives Scholarship, American Academy of Arts and Letters; Guggenheim Fellowship grant; and National Endowment for the Arts composer/librettist fellowship grant. Arranged alphabetically and chronologically within.

Series VII consists of iconography such as photographs of Weingarden alone and with his family. Arranged alphabetically and chronologically within.

Series VIII consists of holograph and facsimile scores of instrumental and vocal music by Weingarden, including the compositions Inquiries of hope: ten poems of Kirby Congdon (1984), and Evening liturgy of consolation (1985), among the earliest musical works to address the AIDS epidemic. Series IX consists of non-commercial sound recordings of music by Louis Weingarden, and of the television opera A childhood miracle by Ned Rorem. Arranged alphabetically by composer and preferred title.

Biographical Note

Composer Louis Weingarden (July 23, 1943-January 19, 1989) studied with Elliott Carter at The Juilliard School for three academic years (1966/67-1970/71) and received a B.M. in Composition on June 4, 1971. During the 1967/68 academic year, Weingarden was awarded the Richard Rodgers Scholarship. Before attending Juilliard, he studied at Cass Technical High School and the Jewish Theological Seminary. Weingarden received the Rome Prize Fellowship for Music (April 1, 1968), the first ever Charles Ives Scholarship by the American Academy of Arts and Letters (May 26 1971), a Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship (March 29, 1973), and a composer/librettist fellowship grant from National Endowment for the Arts (February 16, 1976).
